Chines New Year Shopping

One of the most important festivals that the Chinese celebrate is just round the corner! It is the Chinese New Year. I am so excited about it even though we celebrate it annually, however it is still a time for me to get excited about. After all it is the only time of the year when all our distant relatives gather together and to celebrate this festival, another reason that got me excited is the read packets (or hong bao as we chinese call it)!

My family and i love this festival, as it was just a few weeks away we decided to do some last minute shopping. We went down to Chinatown to do the shopping as well as to soak in on the New Year's atmosphere. When we reached there, the place was as packed as sardines. There were so many stalls to choose from and we were spoilt for choice. After spending 3 hours there we bought many traditional snacks like pineapple tarts, love letters and many more. We also bought new lanterns and other decorations to decorate our house as it would be very plain to welcome our relatives with the same old decorations that was put up in the previous years.

We also threw away many old and unwanted furnitures so as to chase away the bad luck and to welcome the new ones so as the chinese call it. Chinese New Year is also an excuse for my mother and i to splurge on mew clothings, well the money came from my father of course! We went on a shopping spree which lasted several weekends. I bought many shirts, pants and jeans while my mother bought some dresses and woman's favourite, handbags!!! We certainly burnt a big hole in my father's pocket!

However, Chinese New Year is also a period when we should spent the money we received wisely, but we shouldn't just bask in our own happiness and neglect about the less fortunate people, we should also donate a portion of the money we received from the red packets to the charity.
